It’s well known that social media should be a major consideration for pretty much any business that relies on online sources for its traffic. Whether it is social media sites such as Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon or Twitter… there are massive opportunities out there for the businesses that can embrace these social mediums in the right way.
The important part in that last paragraph is “in the right way”. Social media is a fickle ground, and potentially a hazardous one for a commercial entity to enter. If the company goes into it with the wrong mind-set, the potential for harm to the brand name is enormous. If, however, it’s done right… well, the rewards are there for the taking.
We’ll be running through a few posts in the following months that help guide you through the treacherous world of social media, but we thought it might be interesting to start off with an example of how someone else does it; in this case, that someone else is the US Air Force.
David Meerman Scott recently conducted a fascinating interview with Capt. Faggard of the his Air Force Emerging Technology team, which is “responsible for developing strategy, policy and plans for an ever-changing communication landscape for communicators worldwide.”
It’s a great interview, but perhaps the most interesting part was the “flow chart” that the US Air Force uses in its efforts to respond to social media - in this case, blog posts - about them.
There’s a wealth of information to be gathered from this flow chart, and any business looking to engage its users in social media should examine it before doing so. Consider this your introduction to social media, and how it intertwines with the world of SEO.
